Street photography is a type of photography that captures daily life in a social place. Because of the public nature of the setting, the photographer is able to take candid photographs of strangers, often without their knowledge. Street photogra phers aren’t always interested in capturing social events; instead, they try to isolate and catch moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
In this way, street photographers are similar to social chronicle or photojournalists who work in public spaces but with the goal of documenting important occurences.
The advent of services like google street view, which records public space on ahuge scale, as well as growing photographs of self pho tography, further complicate ethical issues represented in attitudes towards Street photography. Street photography, on the other hand, does not always have to include people.
It can also focus on human traces that reveal something about life. Taking candid pho tographs has ramifications. authenticity and rawness are at the heart of street photog raphy. So many street pho tographers avoid asking for permission to photograph some one before pressing the shutter.
First and foremost, check the laws in the area where you intend to shoot. Taking and using photographs of people without their permission is completely legal in the United States and Canada, unless for commercial purposes.
