St. Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the largest Catholic Diocese in India. The community established this church in 1177 and reconstructed it in 1887. It’s construction makes the Diocese’s architectural style and it’s similar to the Portuguese style of architecture. Portuguese architecture style influenced St. Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral and most of the Catholic churches.

St. Mary’s Cathedral is in a mix of neoclassical style. This Cathedral is one of the largest and stone building churches in Kerala. Altar is the main attraction of this church. Interior murals and art in the main church are stunning.Architecture adorned the church using an Ancient Hindu Temple model. Here we can resemble both the both Portuguese style of architecture and Ancient Hindu Temple style of decorations.

The cathedral showcases a blend of architectural styles, including influences from ancient Hindu temple carvings and Portuguese architecture and this fusion reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Beyond its religious functions, St. Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral stands as a testament to the enduring faith and cultural synthesis of the local community, symbolizing centuries of spiritual and architectural evolution.
