Among the dance forms of India, Bharathanatyam the most famous one is the contribution of Tamil Nadu. The former name was Natyam. The kings of Pallava and Chola dynasties popularised all the dance forms starting from the 6th century. In the starting period of the 19th century, the Thanjavur brothers also known as the chinnayya brothers developed the art of Bharathanatyam.
The Mother of All Indian Classical Dances
People may have given the name Bharathanatyam because it is the most famous among all the dance forms that originated in India. Bhava, Raga, and Tala likely inspired the name. Dancers put in a lot of hard work and dedication to excel in Bharathanatyam. Bharathamuni is the founder of the Bharathanatyam. It is also known as the mother of all dance. Bharathanatyam is one of the oldest form of dance art in India. Bharathanatyam is a solo performance from the time originated.
This dance style calls for a great deal of discipline, physical endurance, and dedication. To become proficient in complex footwork, expressive hand gestures (mudras), and expressive facial emotions (abhinaya), dancers must go through a rigorous training program. Traditionally, Bharathanatyam performances feature a dancer performing solo while recounting stories from Indian mythology, particularly those involving Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Krishna.
Beyond its religious roots, Bharathanatyam has developed into a widely acclaimed art form over time. Artists present it on esteemed stages worldwide, maintaining its traditional quality while incorporating modern aesthetics. Bharathanatyam remains a tribute to the enduring beauty of classical dance and a symbol of India’s rich cultural legacy.
