Built in 1579, showcases Kerala’s Christian heritage with unique architecture and historic murals.
Cheriyapalli, meaning “Small Church,” is a historic Christian landmark in Kottayam, built in 1579 by Thekkumkur king Kothavarma for the Mar Thoma Christian community. Originally, all Christians worshipped at Valiyapalli (Big Church), but as it became closely tied to the Knanaya community, the need for a separate place of worship led to Cheriyapalli’s construction. As a result, this church stands as a testament to Kottayam’s rich Christian heritage.

Historical records mention Nestorian bishop Mar Gabriel, who lived and was buried here. Dutch missionary J. Jacobus Kanar Visher also documented his visit, emphasizing the church’s spiritual importance.
