Light rays change direction when they reflect off a surface, move from one transparent medium into another, or travel through a medium whose composition is continuously changing.

Although the direction of light can be modified by reflection or refraction, it always travels in straight lines.

Tube Painting refers to the technique of painting with a tube. The technique of catching the light coming from heavy traffic, known as light trails, depicts the frantic pace of life in cities. Distinct sources of light moving over the image provide different effects that can be used creatively.

This chapter “Depiction of Rays” focuses further into the above-mentioned concepts. When light travels in a precise path beside an exposed shutter, it can produce artistic images.
