The Thakazhi Sree Dharmasastha Temple, a divine masterpiece dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is located near Kuttanad and Ambalapuzha within Alappuzha district. The idol originally placed by Lord Parasurama on Othera Hill was washed away during a flood, and thereafter, a magician (Odiyan) discovered it and brought it to Vilwamangalam Swami, who recognized its shakti and gave it to sage Udhayarkkan for installation. It was built by King Chembakassery.
As one approaches the Lord Ayyappan Temple, the first sight to greet visitors is a serene pond mirroring the temple’s timeless elegance perfectly. In fact this silent reflection symbolises the harmony between the temple’s architecture and Kerala’s lush surroundings. Inside the temple complex, devotees meticulously arrange rows of lamps for the sacred fire, because the reflecting a custom characteristic of ancient temples in Kerala. In order to the bright lamps decorating the space speak of light dispelling darkness and filling the surrounding areas with positive and spiritual energy.

The sanctum houses a beautifully carved Nagam idol, symbolizing the cosmic bond between the divine and the earthly. Next, a brass artifact stands there— a devotional masterpiece full of tradition and spirituality. Still the tortoise idol picture and these items reflect Kerala’s worship legacy and cultural heritage. Because of valiyenna medicinal oil, known for its curative powers, is a sacred offering and holds special significance in this temple.

The Ayyappan Swami Temple’s architecture, with intricate carvings, reflects Kuttanad’s golden legacy of devotion and craftsmanship. The temple follows Manayathattu thantric rites with five daily poojas. The Arattu marks the end of Kumbham’s major eight-day festival. As well as worshippers celebrate the 41-day Kalamezhuthupattu and the 11-day Kalabhabhishekam starting on 1st Dhanu.
