Mattakkara Nadu | A Musical Visual Story

-

Mattakkara a picturesque village renowned for its vast expanse of fertile land lies in the heart of Kerala’s Kottayam district. The name “Mattakkara” itself is a testament to its geography, derived from the Malayalam words “Mattam” (meaning flat land) and “Kkara” (referring to an area along the riverbanks). This idyllic village now serves as the enchanting backdrop for the musical visual story, “Mattakkara Nadu,” a video song dedicated to its natural beauty and vibrant culture.

“Mattakkara Nadu” brings together a talented cast and crew to vividly capture the essence of this serene village. Starring Amalu and Jini Joseph, and directed by Abin Alex Thekkummattathil, the song is a tribute to Mattakkara’s lush landscapes and rich heritage. The evocative lyrics, penned by Fr. Joseph Alex Thekkummattathil OCD, are beautifully brought to life by the soulful voice of Sithara Krishnakumar, with music composed by Sannjith. The project is presented by the Creative Hut Institute of Photography and Film, an institution deeply rooted in Mattakkara.

Discovering Mattakkara

On first glance, Mattakkara might seem remote, but its charm lies in its untouched natural beauty and the warmth of its community. Located approximately 22 km from Kottayam town, 22 km from Ponkunnum, and 18 km from Palai, Mattakkara is easily accessible yet retains a tranquil, unspoiled atmosphere. The village, part of the Akalakunnam Panchayath, is home to around twelve to fifteen thousand people, with a harmonious blend of Hindu and Christian communities.

Mattakkara is characterized by its varied topography, which includes flatlands, hillocks, small water bodies, and the meandering Panagam River. The river, named for its snake-like curves, has historically been vital for transportation and trade. Today, it continues to nourish the village’s lush greenery and diverse agriculture, which includes coconut trees, areca nut trees, rubber trees, pepper plants, tapioca, coffee plantations, and paddy fields.
