The Indian Subcontinent is home to the barred jungle owlet, sometimes known as the jungle owlet (Glaucidium radiatum). The species is typically seen alone, in couples, or in small groups, and its sounds are typically heard at dawn and twilight. Although it is known to call and fly during the day, this owlet is most active between dawn and twilight.

The cry is recognizable and consists of a quick sequence of prao..prao.prao-prao-prao that rises, falls, and then stops suddenly. Sunbirds, treepies, and drongos may crowd them at their daytime roost.
Young nestlings make tick noises during the day that resemble those of a pale-billed flowerpecker. When disturbed, the jungle owls, which roost inside tree cavities, freeze and resemble dead tree stumps.

Before retiring to their roost, they occasionally rest in the early light or perch conspicuously on wires. Although their prime foraging hours are an hour before sunrise and an hour after sunset, they have also been observed to catch little Phylloscopus warblers throughout the day. Insects, tiny birds, reptiles, and rodents make up their food.
