Pilgrims start their journey at the Sri Dharma Sastha Temple in Erumeli, where the Pilgrim’s Path truly begins. Filled with enthusiasm, they dance in the streets, chant “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa,” and apply sandalwood paste to their bodies as part of the Petta Thullal ritual. With each step, they move forward in devotion, marking the start of their sacred pilgrimage.

After leaving the temple, they visit the Vavar Mosque and honor Vavar Swamy, a symbol of interfaith harmony. There, they receive his blessings, gaining renewed energy and deepened faith. With this newfound strength, they continue along the Pilgrim’s Path, moving closer to Sabarimala and their spiritual transformation.

Devout Steps A father’s love shines through in the pilgrimage.
Moreover people refer to Sabarimala pilgrims as Ayyappans for boys and men and Malikappurams for women. Equally important Boys as as five and men take in this sacred journey with unwavering dedication. Women above 50 and young girls under 10 also follow the traditions, fully embracing the pilgrimage. Beforehand, they observe Vratham—a time of celibacy, discipline, and prayer—preparing their minds and bodies for the challenges and blessings of the journey. Moreover, devout steps reflect deep faith and commitment. In particular, a father’s love shines through in the pilgrimage, highlighting the bond between devotion and family.

Before starting their journey, devotees take a vow called Vratham, practicing celibacy, discipline, and devotion. Through this preparation, they strengthen their mind and body for the pilgrimage ahead. In addition they embark on their journey, they walk together in groups, chant prayers, and carry offerings. With each step forward, they progress along the Pilgrim’s Path in faith and unity.
