The purple heron (Ardea purpurea) is widely distributed. It is smaller, more slender, and has darker plumage than the grey heron. This elusive bird prefers vegetated areas near water, especially reed beds. Whether stalking or lurking in ambush, it hunts a variety of prey, including fish, rodents, frogs, and insects.

Purple herons build large nests from sticks or dead reeds near the water’s edge, surrounded by dense vegetation or reeds. Both birds lay and incubate about five bluish-green eggs. About four weeks later, the young hatch, and six weeks later, they fledge.
