The striated heron (Butorides striata), also called the mangrove or green-backed heron, stands 44 cm tall and is mostly sedentary.It nests in small wetlands, ambushing prey by standing motionless at the water’s edge. Its diet includes water invertebrates, frogs, small fish, and sometimes bait.

Precise Observation The striated heron scans the environment, alert and calm.
The nest, 40–50 cm wide and 8–10 cm high, has a 20 cm wide, 4-5 cm deep depression. It’s usually built in trees or shrubs, sometimes on the ground near water. The clutch contains two to five pale blue eggs.
