Switch To Town

In Alappuzha, a women’s protest disrupted the lively streets, with the leader arrested by the police. Amidst the chaos, a painter captured the defiance and energy of the moment in his art. This caused many to switch to town to witness the events firsthand.

After witnessing the hard work of the people who harvest rice and export it in the midday sun and the continuous work of the selfish collectors, I left the peaceful atmosphere of the village and headed for the quiet backwaters of Alappuzha. Suddenly, a change occurred. The gentle sounds of nature faded, and instead, I heard the honking of horns and the shouts of street vendors. It was as if my switch to town had completely altered the setting.

The road was bustling even in the afternoon – the aromas of local snacks mixed with diesel smoke and the faint scent of wilted flowers. The vendors were shouting, their carts full of colorful fresh produce and seafood markets offering the catch of the day. Standing at a tea stall infused with authentic spices, I watched the stories of the city unfold – children laughing, shopkeepers haggling, a man buying jasmine flowers while chatting with a flower vendor. Amidst this hustle and bustle, I also saw the statue of Raja Kesava Das, a visionary who shaped the history of Alappuzha tourism.

Amidst the honking of horns, traders, and footsteps, a painter was painting, undisturbed by the noise around him. The midday sun and the city’s hustle could not distract him from his work. The scene he painted, though political art, stood out to me. It depicted a moment of leadership and vision that symbolized the rise of the city. The painter’s brush moved with purpose, highlighting every detail – the vibrant energy of coconut fiber craft, the intricate craftsmanship, and the resilience of the people flowing like Alappuzha backwaters. Despite the chaos, his focus never wavered, carrying a quiet hope to honor the heritage of a city designed by visionaries as he witnessed the switch to town.

Before I could fully absorb the artist’s skill in capturing quiet political protests, the silence was shattered. Suddenly, a commotion echoed through the streets, jolting me from my thoughts. It was a struggle – a powerful movement that had taken over the city like a storm. The air, once filled with vibrant conversations of vendors, now echoed with the cries of women demanding social justice. Their voices, harsh and uncontrollable, reached every corner, through the clamor of the city. I saw a group of women marching with unwavering determination, their protest banners raised high, their slogans boldly painted in red. This was a fight for their equal rights, their dignity, and their place in a society that had long ignored their voices.

The chants grew louder, echoing through the streets with a fiery determination that no one could ignore. The women advanced, unable to shake their strength, but the police presence was tight around them. The tension in the air was palpable, as if a storm was waiting to break out. Then it happened. The procession leader, in a simple cotton saree, chanted resolutely, her determined eyes refusing silence. The officers quickly entered, their orders sharp and unyielding.

Their murmurs grew into shouts of protest as a crowd gathered to watch the scene unfold. The woman did not resist as the police held her, but her unwavering gaze defied them. Onlookers erupted in anger, some demanding her release, others arguing, but the officers remained relentless. As someone who had recently switched to town, the intensity was overwhelming. The city seemed to hold its breath as the police van door slammed shut, silencing the sounds of the street. The van came to life, disappearing into the maze of Alappuzha roads, taking her to the station.

In the painter’s corner, his brush lay still, eyes fixed on the empty space she had left. For a long time, as if taking on the weight of the scene, he sat motionless. With deliberate sketches, he captured the woman’s resistance and the raw energy of the struggle. Alappuzha’s protests had once again left their mark, ensuring their voices would never be forgotten.
