The Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam is a land of timeless significance, both sacred and cultural- a temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Dating to the early medieval period, it is a remarkable example of classical Kerala architecture – wooden carvings, fine sanctum sanctorum and peaceful surroundings-the epitome of Kottayam’s richness in heritage- faith, art, and history.

Mathathingal Sthapathis, a renowned family of expert architects and artists from the Vishwakarma community, did much for this temple’s structure and preservation. The Thekkumkur kings specifically called upon them to maintain and strengthen the temple’s structure.

Adept in stoneworking and woodworking, they showcase Chola-inspired craftsmanship in the grand entrance hall and beyond. From generation to generation, Sthapathis cared for the temple, receiving offerings and appreciation.

The Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is not just a place of worship but an important cultural hub. The temple proudly holds colorful festivals like Maha Shivaratri and Thirunakkara Pooram, not only preserving traditions but also thereby attracting worshippers and visitors from across the region. The temple actively promotes the traditional art forms of Kerala by regularly hosting classical music and dance performances. Thus, it ensures their preservation while celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Despite rivalries and shifting allegiances, the Mathathingal Sthapathis’ legacy lives on. They have made an Unequaled contribution to preserving the temple and shaping Kottayam’s architectural heritage.
