Kottayam’s churches embody Kerala’s Christian history, art, and religious diversity.

Valiyapalli, built in 1550, is a historic kurisupalli and a landmark in Kottayam, Kerala. Known for its ancient Persian crosses, called Kalkkurušas, inscribed in Pahlavi script, it holds immense cultural and historical significance. The church’s Syrian-Kerala architecture and intricate designs reflect Kerala’s rich heritage.

Once a bustling trading hub along the Meenachil River, Valiyapalli was central to the Knanaya community. Facing persecution, the community built Cheriyapalli, a smaller church, in 1579 during King Kothavarma’s reign.Both churches feature biblical murals painted with natural pigments, adding to their artistic and spiritual value.

These kurisupalli played a pivotal role in Kerala’s Christian history. Valiyapalli hosted Nestorian bishop Mar Gabriel, while spiritual leaders like Thazhathachan enriched the region’s religious life. The Old Seminary, established with missionary support, became a center for education and faith formation. The Kottayam C.S.I. Cathedral Church, home to Kerala’s first printing press, the CMS Press, significantly contributed to Christian education and literature.

Further east, Kurisupalli (Cross Church) in Puthanangadi, built around a discovered wooden cross, became a pilgrimage site for all Christian denominations. Idakkattu Ferronapalli, formed after a split from Valiyapalli, also contributed to the region’s Christian growth. Roman Catholic churches like the Sacred Heart Church and Mar Baselios Church further highlight Kottayam’s religious diversity and harmony.

A stone cross near Alummoodu, revered by all Christian groups, symbolizes unity and shared heritage.Chandipilla Tharakan originally brought it from Chengannur, and as a result, it stands today as a testament to Kottayam’s enduring ecumenical spirit. Together, these landmarks illustrate Kottayam’s vibrant Christian legacy.
