Even though photographing watches can be difficult, this is one of those occasions when any camera will do the trick. You may also find online tutorials that will show you how to take fantastic watch images on a tablet or smartphone. You don’t actually need a specific camera for this type of photography, though an interchangeable lens camera, such as a DSLR or mirrorless camera, or a point-and-shoot camera with manual controls, might be useful for technical shooting sessions.

Although it is by no means necessary, it would be reasonable to assume that you would need (or want) a macro lens for photographing watches. In actuality, not a single picture in this post was taken using a macro lens. Many lenses have a close enough focus to provide decent watch photos. If your lens doesn’t, you might be able to capture the shot you desire by simply adding some extension tubes to the lens to move it closer to the watch. Extension tubes, for those who are not familiar with them, are non-optical tubes that mount between the lens and the camera and enable closer focusing. They were heavily utilised in the photographs that accompanied this post because they are a very affordable solution to boost your close-up photography magnification while preserving the optical quality of your lens.
