Mammal Photography Places

A Guide for Photographers

Written by Abin Alex and Anu Joseph.

Creative Hut Academy Library · Last updated 31 October 2026

Abstract

Mammal photography places are the parks and reserves where wild mammals can be photographed, with their seasons and costs. This guide covers tiger, lion, rhino and snow leopard parks in India with best months, safari rates, Kerala parks and their mammals, and key destinations around the world, with diagrams and tables.

Keywords: mammal photography places, tiger safari, safari rates, Kerala wildlife, Periyar, wildlife destinations, best months

How do you choose a place for mammals?

Short answer. Start with the animal, then check the season, the rate and the rules.

  • Choose the animal first, because each park is known for one or two species. Then check the season, the cost and the rules. Figure 1 gives the three levels of this guide.
  • Safari prices vary by season, zone and day. Treat every figure here as approximate and confirm it on the official site before you pay (Esquire India, 2026).
  • Read the Mammal Photography guide for settings and safari practice, and the Mammals of India guide for the animals.

In photography

Write your dream animal, the park where you can find it, and the month to go.

In cinematography

A wildlife film is planned by season. The month decides the light, the behaviour and the weather.

Cham tipAnimal first, park second, month third.

Cham taskWrite one animal, one park and one month.

Check yourself: What do you choose first?

The animal.

Which Indian parks suit which mammals, and when?

Short answer. Most tiger parks run November to June, Gir runs December to March and Kaziranga November to April.

  • Ranthambore, Tadoba Andhari and Bandhavgarh are tiger parks. One calendar gives March to June for Ranthambore and Tadoba, with May as the peak (TS Kamath, n.d.), and another gives October to June for Ranthambore and November to June for most other tiger parks (Esquire India, 2026). Figure 2 shows the months.
  • Gir, home of the Asiatic lion, is closed from 16 June to 15 October, and December to March is the best time (Esquire India, 2026). Kaziranga, for the one-horned rhinoceros, runs November to April (Esquire India, 2026).
  • Kabini is known for leopards and black panthers. The sources differ on the season, naming October (TS Kamath, n.d.) and the monsoon (121Clicks, n.d.). Hemis in Ladakh is the place for snow leopards in winter, especially January (TS Kamath, n.d.). Table 1 lists the parks.

In photography

Pick two parks from the table and compare their months. Choose the one that fits your calendar.

In cinematography

A tiger sequence in May has heat, dust and waterholes. A November sequence has mist and green. Choose the look first.

What do safaris cost?

Short answer. A jeep costs about ₹2,500 to ₹12,800 per safari, depending on the park, zone and day.

  • Esquire India, updated in October 2026, lists approximate safari prices in rupees. A Bandhavgarh jeep is ₹7,500 to ₹8,500 per safari, Corbett ₹7,000 to ₹8,500 per jeep for six people, Kanha ₹7,500 to ₹10,500 in the core zones, and Tadoba ₹5,800 to ₹12,800 per core-zone jeep (Esquire India, 2026). Figure 3 compares the lower end of each range and Table 2 lists the ranges.
  • At Ranthambore the same article gives ₹1,900 to ₹2,500 per person for a shared seat, ₹11,000 to ₹15,000 or more for a private jeep, and ₹1,300 to ₹1,500 for a canter (Esquire India, 2026).
  • Rajasthan raised Ranthambore entry fees by 10 percent from 1 April, to ₹986.63 for Indians and ₹2,399.63 for foreigners in a canter, and ₹1,611.80 and ₹3,024.80 in an open jeep (ETV Bharat, 2026). Table 3 gives the fees. Add guide fees, permits and transport to your budget.

In photography

Make a budget for one safari trip: safari, guide, permit, stay and travel. Add ten percent for price changes.

In cinematography

Budget for several drives, not one. Wildlife footage needs repeated time in the field.

[Lecture example slot: a ticket counter board with the day's safari prices]

Cham tipBook several safaris, not one.

Cham taskWrite the budget for a three-safari trip.

Check yourself: How much does a Bandhavgarh jeep cost per safari?

About ₹7,500 to ₹8,500.

Where can you photograph mammals in Kerala?

Short answer. Periyar, Eravikulam, Silent Valley, Idukki, Chinnar, Parambikulam and Wayanad.

  • Periyar Tiger Reserve lists Asian elephants, tigers, Indian bison, sambar, wild dogs, leopards, barking deer and smooth-coated otters. Boat rides on Periyar Lake let you watch elephants drinking and bathing (Outlook Traveller, n.d.; Onmanorama, 2024).
  • Eravikulam has Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langurs, leopards and Indian bison. Silent Valley has lion-tailed macaques and Malabar giant squirrels, among others (Outlook Traveller, n.d.). Figure 4 maps the subjects.
  • For elephants, herds gather most evenings at the Anakkulam stream near Mankulam, and Chinnar is best in the early morning and late afternoon (Onmanorama, 2024). Table 4 lists the places. A Periyar tiger trail costs around ₹6,000 per person onwards (TravelTriangle, 2025). The sources give no best months for Kerala parks, so ask the reserve.

Table 4. Mammal photography places in Kerala.

In photography

Plan one Kerala weekend: Periyar for elephants on the lake, or Eravikulam for tahr. Write how you will reach it.

In cinematography

Boat work on Periyar Lake gives a low, steady camera angle on elephants. Plan a tripod or beanbag mount for the boat.

[Lecture example slot: elephants at the edge of Periyar Lake]

Cham tipPick one Kerala subject and plan around it.

Cham taskWrite a two-day Kerala mammal plan.

Check yourself: Which Kerala site is known for Nilgiri tahr?

Eravikulam.

Which places around the world suit mammal photography?

Short answer. Maasai Mara in September, Spitsbergen in June, Alaska in July and the Galapagos in November.

  • One list of 20 great wildlife destinations includes Maasai Mara, Spitsbergen, Etosha, Yellowstone, the Galapagos, the Okavango Delta, Kruger, Yala, Chitwan, Wrangel Island and Ranthambore (Light and Land, n.d.).
  • One wildlife calendar gives September for the Maasai Mara migration, which starts around July, with wildebeest staying in Kenya into October and November. It gives June for Spitsbergen polar bears, July for Alaska brown bears feeding on salmon, and November for Galapagos sea lion pups (Exodus Travels, n.d.). Figure 5 shows the months and Table 5 lists the places.
  • The calendar gives no month for Yellowstone, the Okavango, Etosha, Kruger, Yala or Chitwan, so ask an operator.

Table 5. World places for mammal photography.

In photography

Pick one world place and one Indian place for the same animal family, for example bears or elephants. Compare them.

In cinematography

A world trip is a film in itself. Plan the story arc by season, from the Arctic summer to the African migration.

[Lecture example slot: a polar bear on Arctic ice in June light]

Cham tipPlan a far trip around one event, such as a migration.

Cham taskChoose one world place and write the month to go.

Check yourself: Which month does the calendar give for Spitsbergen polar bears?

June.

How do you plan a mammal photography tour?

Short answer. Animal, season, rates, rules, then book.

  • Follow the five steps in Figure 6. Choose the animal, check the season, confirm the rate, read the rules, and then book.
  • Check park closures. Gir is closed from 16 June to 15 October, and Dudhwa is open from 15 November to 15 June (Esquire India, 2026).
  • Know the vehicle rules before you go. The NTCA expects safari vehicles to stay at least 500 m apart, as the Mammal Photography guide explains.
