Picture Styles and Camera Calibration
Written by Abin Alex and Anu Joseph.
Abstract
A picture style is a set of image-processing settings that controls how a camera renders sharpness, contrast, saturation and colour tone. Makers use different names for it, including Picture Style, Picture Control, Creative Look, Film Simulation and Photo Style. This guide lists these names, then explains the adjustable settings, the preset styles, the monochrome style and custom styles. It also covers camera profiles and calibration, which bring a camera’s colour response close to a chosen target, and the flat looks that cinematographers use to keep detail for the grade. It is written for photographers and cinematographers.

What is a picture style, and what do makers call it?
Short answer. A picture style is a saved recipe of image-processing settings. It shapes the look of the picture before you edit it (Canon Inc., n.d.-b).
- There is no single name. Canon calls it Picture Style (Canon Inc., n.d.-b), Nikon calls it Picture Control (Nikon Corporation, n.d.), Sony calls it Creative Look for stills and movies and Picture Profile for movies (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a) (Sony Corporation, n.d.-b), Fujifilm calls it Film Simulation (Fujifilm Corporation, n.d.) and Panasonic calls it Photo Style (Panasonic Corporation, n.d.). This guide says picture style for all of them.
- The recipe sets sharpness, contrast, saturation and colour tone, and brings them into one menu.
- It is applied to JPEG files and to the picture you see on the screen. On most cameras a RAW file keeps its original data and stores the style as a setting. Check your camera’s manual.
- Choose a style that suits the subject, then fine-tune it to your taste.
- Calibration here means making the camera’s colour response match what you want. This guide also covers camera profiles in editing software.
A wedding photographer who delivers JPEGs straight from the camera picks a Portrait style for skin tones. A landscape photographer uses Landscape or Vivid for deeper skies and leaves.
On video cameras the same idea is called a picture profile or look. The operator may choose a flat one to keep detail for the grade.
Cham tipPick a style before you shoot. Then the JPEG looks right with no editing.
Cham taskShoot one scene in every picture style your camera has. Compare them on a computer.

What does each camera maker call a picture style?
Short answer. Each maker uses its own name for the same idea. Canon says Picture Style, Nikon says Picture Control, Sony says Creative Look and Picture Profile, Fujifilm says Film Simulation and Panasonic says Photo Style (Canon Inc., n.d.-b) (Nikon Corporation, n.d.) (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a) (Sony Corporation, n.d.-b) (Fujifilm Corporation, n.d.) (Panasonic Corporation, n.d.).
- Canon: Picture Style (Canon Inc., n.d.-b). Nikon: Picture Control (Nikon Corporation, n.d.).
- Sony: Creative Look works for stills and movies, with ten presets and a Custom Look (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a). Picture Profile is for movies and sets the gamma curve, colour and detail (Sony Corporation, n.d.-b).
- Fujifilm: Film Simulation imitates the colour and tone of Fujifilm film stocks (Fujifilm Corporation, n.d.).
- Panasonic: Photo Style, with Standard, Vivid, Natural, Flat, L.ClassicNeo, Landscape, Portrait, Cinelike D2 and Cinelike V2 (Panasonic Corporation, n.d.).
- RED: IPP2 records in REDWideGamutRGB with the Log3G10 curve (RED Digital Cinema, n.d.).
- Blackmagic: Generation 5 colour science records in a custom 12-bit non-linear space (Blackmagic Design, n.d.).
- Hasselblad, ARRI, RED and Blackmagic describe their colour in terms of colour science, not picture styles. See the guide on colour science.
- The idea is the same everywhere: a saved recipe that shapes the look. The names, presets and values differ, so learn the names for your own camera.
| Maker | Name of the feature | Examples and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canon | Picture Style | Auto, Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome |
| Nikon | Picture Control | Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Flat |
| Sony (stills and movies) | Creative Look | ST, PT, NT, VV, VV2, FL, IN, SH, BW, SE and Custom Look. Sliders for contrast, highlights, shadows, fade, saturation, sharpness and clarity |
| Sony (movies) | Picture Profile | Gamma curve, colour and detail, saved as PP1, PP2 and so on |
| Fujifilm | Film Simulation | Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Pro Neg. Hi and Std, Classic Neg., Eterna, Acros, Monochrome, Sepia |
| Panasonic | Photo Style | Standard, Vivid, Natural, Flat, L.ClassicNeo, Landscape, Portrait, Cinelike D2, Cinelike V2 |
| RED | IPP2 image pipeline | REDWideGamutRGB colour with the Log3G10 curve. The look is added in the grade |
| Blackmagic Design | Generation 5 colour science | Recorded in a custom 12-bit non-linear space in Blackmagic RAW |
| Hasselblad | Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) | One colour system for all subjects, with no subject presets |
| ARRI | REVEAL Color Science | ARRI Color Engine ACE4, ARRI Wide Gamut 4 and the LogC4 curve |
Table 1. What each maker calls its look settings. Other makers use their own names, so check your manual (Canon Inc., n.d.-b) (Nikon Corporation, n.d.) (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a) (Sony Corporation, n.d.-b) (Fujifilm Corporation, n.d.) (Panasonic Corporation, n.d.) (RED Digital Cinema, n.d.) (Blackmagic Design, n.d.) (Hasselblad, n.d.) (ARRI, n.d.).
If you move from Canon to Sony, look for Creative Look. You will not find a menu called Picture Style.
On cinema cameras the look is often applied in the grade, not in the camera. The camera records a flat, wide-gamut image.
Cham tipSearch your camera manual for the maker name, not for picture style.
Cham taskFind the look setting in your camera menu. Write its exact name and the preset names it offers.

Creative Look for stills and movies, and Picture Profile for movies.
What settings can I change in a picture style?
Short answer. The main settings are sharpness, contrast, saturation and colour tone, also called hue. Nikon adds brightness (Canon Inc., n.d.-b) (Nikon Corporation, n.d.).
- Sharpness sets how strongly the outlines are drawn. Higher values look crisper and too much looks harsh.
- Contrast sets the difference between light and dark. A lower value gives soft tones and helps to protect highlights in harsh light.
- Saturation sets how vivid the colours are. Lower values mute them and higher values make them richer.
- Colour tone, or hue, shifts the colours. For skin, one direction adds red and the other adds yellow.
- Nikon’s Quick Adjust moves sharpening, contrast and saturation together in one step (Nikon Corporation, n.d.).
- Make small changes. A picture style cannot add detail that was lost to clipping.
- Sony Creative Look lets you adjust contrast, highlights, shadows, fade, saturation, sharpness, sharpness range and clarity (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a).
| Setting | What it does | Take care with |
|---|---|---|
| Sharpness | Draws outlines more or less strongly | Over-sharpening gives halos |
| Contrast | Widens or narrows light and dark | Too high clips highlights |
| Saturation | Sets how vivid colours are | Too high loses skin and fine tone |
| Colour tone (hue) | Shifts colours round the wheel | Skin looks wrong quickly |
| Brightness (Nikon) | Lightens or darkens without changing exposure | Do not use it instead of exposure |
Table 2. The main picture style settings.
If skin looks too red in a portrait, move the colour tone a step towards yellow before changing anything else.
A DIT may lower contrast and saturation on the monitor preview so the grade has more to work with.
Cham tipChange one setting at a time and take a test shot after each.
Cham taskTake a portrait in Standard. Lower the contrast by two steps, shoot again and compare the highlights.
Check yourself: Which setting makes colours richer?
Saturation.
What do the preset styles do?
Short answer. Presets are ready-made recipes for common subjects. Standard is the default, Portrait is gentle on skin, Landscape deepens blue and green and Neutral keeps detail for editing (Canon Inc., n.d.-b).
- Standard is the default. It uses slightly high sharpness and saturation and suits general photography and printing without editing (Canon Inc., n.d.-b).
- Portrait softens sharpness a little and sets the colour tone for natural skin.
- Landscape raises the saturation of blues and greens and sharpens outlines, which suits skies and foliage.
- Neutral moderates contrast and saturation, so there is less risk of clipped highlights. It keeps detail for later correction (Canon Inc., n.d.-b).
- Faithful, on Canon cameras, aims at colours close to the real scene in daylight and applies no sharpening. It suits copying artwork and product photography.
- Vivid, on Nikon cameras, gives punchy colours that emphasise the primaries. Flat keeps the full range for heavy editing (Nikon Corporation, n.d.). Monochrome gives black and white.
| Style | Best for | Look |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Mixed shooting | The camera chooses a style |
| Standard | Everyday pictures and prints | Crisp, vivid colour |
| Portrait | People | Gentle sharpness, natural skin |
| Landscape | Skies, foliage, cities | Deep blues and greens |
| Neutral | Pictures you will edit | Restrained contrast and colour |
| Faithful (Canon) | Product and copy work | True to the scene |
| Vivid (Nikon) | Fashion, flowers, street colour | Rich, punchy colour |
| Flat (Nikon) | Heavy editing, video | Low contrast, muted colour |
| Monochrome | Black and white | No colour |
Table 3. Common preset styles. Names and exact values differ between makers and models (Canon Inc., n.d.-b) (Nikon Corporation, n.d.).
For a white dress or a red car, choose Neutral over Standard. Standard can blow the white and over-saturate the red, and Neutral keeps both under control.
A DOP shooting for a heavy grade picks the flattest style the camera offers, then lets the colourist add contrast and colour.
Cham tipIf you will edit the picture, choose Neutral or Flat. If you will not, choose the style that looks best.
Cham taskShoot a white shirt against a red wall in Standard and in Neutral. Check the highlights.
Check yourself: Which preset keeps the most detail for editing?
Neutral, or Flat on cameras that have it.
What does the Monochrome style offer?
Short answer. Monochrome records a black and white picture in the camera. It offers filter effects and toning, a digital version of the darkroom (Canon Inc., n.d.-a).
- Sharpness is set fairly strong, and the colour controls are replaced by filter and toning effects (Canon Inc., n.d.-a).
- A filter effect changes how colours turn into grey. Orange brightens skin and red darkens a blue sky.
- Toning adds a colour to the grey picture, such as sepia or blue.
- Check how your camera stores the picture. The monochrome look may be applied to the JPEG and the preview, while a RAW file keeps its colour.
- The black and white guide explains how colours turn to greys and how filters work.
- Other makers use other names. Nikon has a Monochrome Picture Control (Nikon Corporation, n.d.), Sony has the BW Creative Look (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a), and Fujifilm has Acros and Monochrome Film Simulations (Fujifilm Corporation, n.d.).
Shoot RAW and JPEG with Monochrome on. The screen shows black and white, which helps you see tone and form, and the RAW file keeps colour for later.
A monitor can show a black and white preview while the camera records colour. The operator judges the light and shapes without colour.
Cham tipTurn on Monochrome as a viewing aid even when you plan to shoot colour.
Cham taskShoot a sky and a face in Monochrome with no filter, orange and red. Compare.
Check yourself: What does a red filter effect do to a blue sky?
It darkens it.
Can I make my own picture style?
Short answer. Yes. Start from a preset, adjust the settings and save it. Canon cameras keep three user-defined slots, and Nikon lets you save custom Picture Controls (Nikon Corporation, n.d.).
- Start from the preset closest to your wish and then change one setting at a time.
- Canon cameras show three user-defined styles, called User Def. 1, 2 and 3, below the preset styles.
- Give each custom style a name, such as Portrait soft or Wedding flat, so you find it again.
- Keep a log of your settings so you can repeat a look on another body.
- Test each custom style under the real light before the shoot.
A studio that prints direct from camera may save a custom style tuned to its printer, so every file looks the same.
A video team saves one custom profile for all cameras on the project, so shots from different bodies match.
Cham tipA custom style is only useful if you can repeat it. Write the settings down.
Cham taskBuild a custom style for portraits. Save it, then shoot the same face in it and in Standard.
Check yourself: How should you name a custom style?
With a clear name for its job, such as Portrait soft.
What are camera profiles and calibration?
Short answer. A camera profile is a set of colour data that tells editing software how the sensor sees colour. A custom profile can be built from a shot of a colour target (X-Rite, n.d.).
- When you open a RAW file the software uses a profile to turn sensor data into colour. Lightroom and Camera Raw list profiles in the Camera Calibration panel (X-Rite, n.d.).
- Software also offers profiles that imitate the camera’s own styles, so a RAW file can look like the camera’s Standard or Portrait picture.
- A ColorChecker target photographed in the light of the shoot lets software build a custom DNG profile (X-Rite, n.d.).
- Make the profile from a well exposed shot of the target in the same light as the job.
- Profiles fix the camera’s colour response. They do not replace white balance, which fixes the colour of the light.
A product photographer who must match a brand colour photographs a colour target in the first frame of every session and builds a profile from it.
A DIT shoots a chart at the start of a set-up and the colourist uses it to match cameras and lights.
Cham tipUse a colour target when colour accuracy matters, such as products, art and brand work.
Cham taskPhotograph a colour target in daylight. Compare its patches with the printed chart on screen.
Check yourself: What is a camera profile for?
It tells software how the sensor sees colour, so RAW files are turned into accurate colour.
How do cinematographers use picture styles and flat looks?
Short answer. On video cameras a flat or log profile keeps as much of the range as possible. Contrast and colour are added in the grade. Nikon’s Flat style follows the same idea (Nikon Corporation, n.d.).
- A flat look has low contrast and muted colour. It looks dull on set but holds detail from the highlights to the shadows (Nikon Corporation, n.d.).
- Many video cameras offer log profiles. They spread the sensor’s range across the file so the colourist has room.
- A flat picture is hard to judge on set. Use a monitor LUT, a preview that adds contrast for viewing only.
- Expose a flat or log picture carefully. Noise in the shadows shows when the grade lifts them.
- If a project goes straight to delivery with no grade, use a normal style instead.
- Sony Picture Profile adjusts the gamma curve, colour and detail for movies, and applies them while recording, before compression (Sony Corporation, n.d.-b).
- RED cameras record through IPP2, in REDWideGamutRGB with the Log3G10 curve (RED Digital Cinema, n.d.). Blackmagic cameras use Generation 5 colour science and record in a custom 12-bit non-linear space (Blackmagic Design, n.d.).
- Panasonic Cinelike D2 uses film-style gamma curves for wide dynamic range, and Cinelike V2 gives a high-contrast cinematic look (Panasonic Corporation, n.d.). ARRI cameras with REVEAL record the LogC4 curve in ARRI Wide Gamut 4 (ARRI, n.d.).
A hybrid shooter who shoots video of a wedding may use a flat style for the ceremony and a standard one for quick social clips.
The DOP agrees the profile and LUT with the colourist before the shoot, so the look on the monitor and in the grade match.
Cham tipFlat is for footage that will be graded. Do not send flat footage straight to the client.
Cham taskShoot one clip in a flat style and one in Standard. Grade the flat one to match.
Check yourself: Why shoot flat?
To keep the full range for the grade.
Questions beginners ask
What is a picture style?
It is a saved set of image-processing settings for sharpness, contrast, saturation and colour tone. Canon calls it Picture Style (Canon Inc., n.d.-b), Nikon calls it Picture Control (Nikon Corporation, n.d.), Sony calls it Creative Look (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a) and Fujifilm calls it Film Simulation (Fujifilm Corporation, n.d.).
Does a picture style change a RAW file?
On most cameras it does not change the RAW data. It is stored as a setting and applied to JPEG files and previews. Check your manual.
Which picture style is best for portraits?
Portrait, or a custom style with lower sharpness and natural skin tones.
Which picture style should I use if I edit my pictures?
Neutral or Flat, because they keep more detail for editing.
What is the difference between Neutral and Standard?
Standard is crisper and more vivid. Neutral has restrained contrast and saturation and keeps detail for editing.
What is a flat picture style for?
Video and heavy editing. It has low contrast and muted colour so that detail is kept.
What do other makers call a picture style?
Sony uses Creative Look for stills and movies and Picture Profile for movies (Sony Corporation, n.d.-a) (Sony Corporation, n.d.-b). Fujifilm uses Film Simulation (Fujifilm Corporation, n.d.) and Panasonic uses Photo Style (Panasonic Corporation, n.d.). Hasselblad uses HNCS (Hasselblad, n.d.), ARRI uses REVEAL Color Science (ARRI, n.d.), RED uses IPP2 (RED Digital Cinema, n.d.) and Blackmagic uses Generation 5 colour science (Blackmagic Design, n.d.).
