Portrait Types and Styles

A Guide for Photographers

Written by Abin Alex and Anu Joseph.

Creative Hut Academy Library · Last updated 1 November 2026

Abstract

A practical guide to portrait types and styles: what a portrait is, shot sizes from facial to full body, and traditional, conceptual, candid, environmental, lifestyle, glamour, art and culture, abstract, motion blur, surreal and identity portraits, with two tables.

Keywords: portrait types, portrait styles, environmental portrait, candid portrait, lifestyle portrait, conceptual portrait, glamour portrait, head shot

What is a portrait?

Short answer. A representation of a person in which the face and its expression matter most.

  • A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture or other representation of a person in which the face and its expression are the most important part. Portrait photography captures the personality of a person or group through lighting, backdrop and pose.
  • Portraiture sits inside commercial photography, which means photographs made for business use: advertising, brochures, magazines, e-commerce and events. At Creative Hut, commercial photography covers portrait, wedding, fashion and product work.
  • The most appealing portraits keep the eyes and face sharp and let less important elements fall soft. Sometimes a single feature, such as the hands or the eyes, becomes the subject.
  • Style is hard to define but easy to recognise. A professional shapes expression, mood, light and composition while talking with the subject, rather than relying on happy accidents (Jacobs, 2008, p. 4).
In photography

Shoot one portrait with the eyes sharp at a wide aperture, then one at a small aperture. Compare where the eye goes.

In cinematography

A close-up in film works the same way: sharp eyes, soft background.

[Lecture example slot: eyes sharp with a soft background]

Cham tipFocus on the nearer eye.

Cham taskWrite your own definition of a portrait in one sentence.

Check yourself: What matters most in a portrait?

The face and its expression.

What are the portrait shot sizes?

Short answer. Facial, head shot, close-up, upper body and full body, for one person, a couple or a group.

  • Table 1 lists the shot sizes. Each frames more of the body, from the face alone to the whole figure.
  • Any of them can be shot as an individual, a couple or a group portrait. Choose the size for the use: a head shot for a profile picture, an upper body shot for a magazine, a full body shot to show an outfit.

Close-upHead and shouldersEditorial, portraits

Table 1. Portrait shot sizes.

In photography

Shoot one model at all five sizes without moving the light.

In cinematography

Film uses the same scale: extreme close-up, close-up, medium and long shot.

[Lecture example slot: one model at five shot sizes]

Cham tipChoose the size for where the picture will be used.

Cham taskMake a five-frame sheet showing each shot size.

Check yourself: Which shot size best shows an outfit?

The full body shot.

What are traditional and conceptual portraits?

Short answer. Traditional portraits show a likeness, usually posed and looking at the camera. Conceptual ones carry an idea.

  • A traditional or classical portrait shows a likeness of the person. The face dominates, the subject usually looks at the camera, and the frame is a head shot, two thirds or full length. It can be posed or formal, in the studio or on location, with the photographer building an idea round the subject. Such portraits are useful historical records.
  • A conceptual portrait adds an idea. Its meaning is partly hidden and the viewer decides what message it carries. Advertising uses conceptual portraits, but with ideas that are easier to read.
In photography

Shoot one formal portrait and one conceptual portrait of the same person.

In cinematography

A poster for a film is often a conceptual portrait of the lead.

[Lecture example slot: one formal and one conceptual portrait]

Cham tipWrite the idea in one line before a conceptual shoot.

Cham taskPlan a conceptual portrait and write the message you want the viewer to find.

Check yourself: Where does a traditional portrait subject usually look?

At the camera.

What are candid, environmental and lifestyle portraits?

Short answer. Candid catches people unposed, environmental places them in their world, lifestyle combines the two.

  • A candid portrait is taken without posing, while the subject goes about their activity. Like environmental work, it is a valuable record of how people live.
  • An environmental portrait places the subject in their own surroundings, which describe their character: a builder on site, a teacher in a classroom, a chef in a kitchen or a sculptor in a studio.
  • A lifestyle portrait shows how the subject lives and stirs emotion in the viewer. It combines environmental and candid portraiture, and it is common in wedding and family work.
In photography

Photograph someone at work in their own space, first posed and then candid.

In cinematography

Documentary film relies on environmental and candid portraits of its subjects.

[Lecture example slot: an environmental portrait at work]

Cham tipLet the place describe the person.

Cham taskMake an environmental portrait of a worker and write what the setting tells us.

Check yourself: What does a lifestyle portrait combine?

Environmental and candid portraiture.

What are the creative portrait styles?

Short answer. Glamour, art and culture, abstract, motion blur and surreal portraits.

  • Table 2 lists five creative styles. A glamour portrait stresses the romantic appeal of the subject. An art and culture portrait records an art form through expression, hair, costume and make-up, such as a Kathakali or Theyyam performer.
  • An abstract portrait aims to make art rather than a realistic likeness, often with collage or digital manipulation. A motion blur portrait uses a slow shutter to show movement. A surreal portrait, from the art movement of the early 1920s, uses tricks and effects to show an inner or dreamlike reality.

Table 2. Creative portrait styles.

In photography

Make one motion blur portrait with a slow shutter and a moving subject.

In cinematography

Music videos often borrow from abstract and surreal portraiture.

[Lecture example slot: one portrait in a creative style]

Cham tipDecide the style before the shoot, not after.

Cham taskShoot an art and culture portrait of a performer in costume.

Check yourself: What does an art and culture portrait record?

An art form, through expression, costume, hair and make-up.

What is an identity portrait?

Short answer. A plain, front-facing portrait used to identify a person, made to the rules of the issuing authority.

  • An identity portrait, such as a passport or visa photograph, exists to identify the person. It is used for passports, banks, government forms and applications.
  • The size, head size, background, expression and rules on glasses differ by country and change over time. Always check the current specification from the authority that will accept the photograph before you shoot.
  • Use even, shadowless light, a plain background and a neutral expression with the subject facing the camera, unless the rules say otherwise.
In photography

Find the current photograph rules for an Indian passport and shoot one frame that meets them.

In cinematography

Casting photographs follow a similar plain style so the face can be judged.

[Lecture example slot: an identity portrait to a current specification]

Cham tipCheck the rules first, they change.

Cham taskShoot an identity portrait to the current rules of one authority and list the rules you followed.

Check yourself: Why check the rules before an identity portrait?

Size, background and other rules differ by country and change over time.
