Part 7 of 13 in the aperture guide

What is effective aperture?

Written by Abin Alex, Founder and Director, and Anu Joseph, Faculty, Creative Hut Academy. Reviewed 29 October 2026.

Short answer. The effective aperture, or entrance pupil, is how wide the opening appears when you look into the front of the lens. The f-number is the focal length divided by this width, not by the physical hole in the blades.

  • The glass in front of the diaphragm magnifies or reduces the opening, so the apparent opening is not the same as the real one.
  • The entrance pupil is the image of the aperture stop as seen from the subject side.[2]
  • That is why you cannot get the f-number by measuring the blades with a ruler.
  • The standard defines the f-number this way, using the entrance pupil.[1][2]
In photography
Look into the front of a lens set to f/2.8. The bright circle you see is the entrance pupil, a magnified image of the blades.
In cinematography
Lens makers mark and test the T-stop using this effective opening and measured transmission. The DOP trusts the marking and does not judge by looking into the lens.

Questions people ask

What is the entrance pupil?

It is the image of the aperture stop as seen from the subject side of the lens.

Why is the f-number based on the effective aperture?

The standard defines the f-number using the entrance pupil, not the physical hole in the blades, because the glass in front of the blades changes how wide the opening looks.
